Background of the Study
Health emergency drills are an essential part of disaster preparedness for hospitals, particularly in regions like Taraba State, which is susceptible to natural disasters such as floods and landslides (Ali & Habibu, 2024). These drills allow healthcare workers to practice emergency response procedures, such as triage, patient management, and evacuation plans, which can significantly improve hospital readiness during actual natural disaster events. However, the effectiveness of such drills in enhancing hospital readiness and response during natural disasters in Taraba State has not been sufficiently explored.
Statement of the Problem
While health emergency drills are commonly recommended, hospitals in Taraba State may not be adequately prepared for large-scale natural disasters due to insufficient or irregular participation in drills. The lack of comprehensive evaluation of these drills makes it difficult to assess their actual impact on hospital readiness during natural disasters.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the frequency and quality of health emergency drills conducted in hospitals in Taraba State.
2. To evaluate the impact of health emergency drills on hospital preparedness for natural disasters.
3. To identify barriers to conducting effective health emergency drills in hospitals.
Research Questions
1. How frequently are health emergency drills conducted in hospitals in Taraba State?
2. How do health emergency drills improve hospital preparedness for natural disasters in Taraba State?
3. What challenges hinder the successful implementation of health emergency drills in hospitals?
Research Hypotheses
1. Health emergency drills are conducted infrequently or inadequately in hospitals in Taraba State.
2. Health emergency drills positively influence hospital preparedness for responding to natural disasters.
3. Lack of resources and staff participation negatively impacts the effectiveness of health emergency drills in hospitals.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hospitals in Taraba State, examining their preparedness for natural disasters and the impact of health emergency drills. Limitations may include the inconsistent implementation of drills across hospitals and the challenge of measuring readiness in real disaster scenarios.
Definitions of Terms
• Health Emergency Drills: Simulated emergency response exercises designed to train hospital staff in dealing with various disaster scenarios.
• Hospital Readiness: The preparedness level of hospitals to effectively manage and respond to natural disasters, including staffing, resource allocation, and logistical planning.
